People often say “herbs are toxins,” but this is only partially true and lacks context. Many substances in nature can become harmful depending on the dose, preparation, and how they are used — including water, vitamins, and pharmaceuticals. Traditional herbal medicine developed through careful observation over thousands of years, identifying which substances nourish, regulate, purge, warm, cool, or stimulate the body.
Some herbs are strong and must be used correctly, while others are closer to foods. In Traditional East Asian Medicine, herbs are never simply “taken because they are natural.” They are selected based on pattern differentiation, preparation methods, dosage, and combination with other herbs to guide and balance their effects.
Modern pharmaceuticals also originate from plant compounds. The difference is not “natural vs toxic,” but whether something is used appropriately, safely, and according to the individual presentation. Even classical texts repeatedly warn that the wrong herb, wrong dose, or wrong timing can create harm.
The real question is not whether herbs can be toxic — some absolutely can be — but whether they are being prescribed responsibly, professionally, and according to proper diagnosis.
