Cold and flu blends are a good example of why formula patterns matter. Two people may both have a “cold,” yet require completely different herbal approaches.
One person may present with chills, body aches, tight muscles, no sweating, and a floating pulse — a surface cold pattern requiring warming, releasing herbs. Another may have fever, sore throat, thirst, irritability, and sweating — a heat pattern requiring cooling and ventilating herbs.
If herbs were simply “toxins,” there would be no reason these distinctions matter. But classical herbal medicine recognised that the body responds differently depending on the stage, depth, and nature of the illness.
